ANZAC PARK HOUSE

WHY

The block is delightfully located on Anzac Park with proximity to the War Memorial and Lake Burley Griffin. Initially the client envisioned a renovation and extension to the existing 1960’s home to achieve a four-bedroom, two-living space home, with aspiration for improved connection to the backyard.

HOW

Previous extensions to the original home had compromised the internal layout and relationship to the garden. A two-storey knockdown-rebuild option was found to most effectively create an amenable backyard and providing the additional internal spaces of the brief with north orientation throughout.

A long pitched roof defines the form, with clerestory pop‑ups allowing the upper‑level bedrooms to tuck discreetly into the loft-like space. The roof becomes playfully asymmetrical and continues uninterrupted over the living spaces, creating a clean external silhouette and grand raked ceilings internally.

Material expression helps break down the massing: brick grounds the base, while standing‑seam metal wraps the roof and upper level. Brick continues inside, most notably at the curved stair, complemented by timber ceilings, floors and joinery elements.

The design intent was to remain respectful to the established streetscape while giving permission for a confident contemporary insertion. At the rear, a generous lawn and pool support family life, with deep‑root planting zones. Privacy to the main living areas is maintained, yet connection to the unique Anzac Parade frontage is unveiled via the entry link’s purposeful vista to the rear pergola.
