KAMBAH DUAL OCCUPANCY

WHY

The goal of the project was to make sustainable, architecturally designed housing accessible to the broader market. The existing site was an empty “surrendered” corner block in suburbia. The site is bordered by native gums and wattles and sits opposite a nature reserve. The site created opportunity for denser re-development, whilst retaining a scale to reference the single dwelling character of the street.

HOW

The two new dwellings have been positioned on the site to create maximum separation and privacy from each other, and receive maximum solar access. Each dwelling has a focus on connection to the outdoors and the street. The first dwelling is a humble 3-bedroom dwelling, while the second dwelling is a larger L-shaped dwelling with two street frontages, 4 bedrooms and 2 living spaces. The project was low budget and focused on removing excess. The dwellings were designed to minimise trades, materials, and complexity, while not diminishing the experience of the space or its sustainability credentials.
